Perhaps you’ve seen thick cardboards almost the size of a hand with colourful illustrations of samurais, mecha, anime and manga characters. These cards are called Menko and they are what you use when you play the game of the same name.

Menko (めんこ, 面子) is a Japanese card game that uses cards of the same name. Two or more players can play as long as they have cards of their own. The objective is to flip the cards laid down on any surface by throwing down your own card. If a card is flipped, it becomes your own and the player whose card was flipped is kicked out of the game. The player with the most cards won is declared the winner.

Japanese Menko’s popularization dates back to the Edo period between 1603 and 1868. Each card is made out of thick cardboard with illustrations printed on one or both sides. Depending on the era, the images reflect the popular culture of its time. Ninja and samurai illustrations can be found on vintage menko cards that date back in the Edo and Meiji periods. In more recent years, images of baseball players and characters in popular anime and manga series are printed on menko cards.

How to Play Menko: Game Mechanics

Before playing Japanese Menko, each player should have their cards first. Players decide turns by playing rock, paper, scissors. Those who are not playing yet lay their cards on the ground or any flat surface.

The player whose turn it is tries to flip any card from the ground by throwing his card on it. If the card on the ground flips, the player wins it over and he gets to throw again. The player who owned the flipped card is taken out of the game.

If no card flips, the next player gets to throw. The player with the highest number of flipped cards wins.

In another variation, the cards are placed inside a drawn circle about 1 meter in diameter. If the cards fly out of the circle, they are won and the player to whom the card belonged is kicked out of the game.

Japanese Menko appeals to people of all ages because of its simple mechanics. Children can battle it out with adults and win. Its basic appeal is the reason why it survived throughout different periods. Buy a card of Japanese Menko and play with your friends now!
