What is Russian poker?

Originating from Russia, Russian poker was introduced in the early 1990s when the country became home to a sizable group of elite gamblers after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. At the time, players clamoured for VIP status and access to more games, which casino operators saw as a potential to grow their business.

To accommodate more people, Russian poker was introduced and became popular since it catered to a maximum of six players to participate.

In this variant, the players do not compete against one another but instead, take on house. Therefore, the main goal of the players is to get a hand that is superior to the dealer’s. A high card is the lowest possible hand in Russian Poker, followed by one pair, two pairs, three-of-a-kind, and up to a royal flush.

How to play Russian Poker

What makes a game of Russian poker different from others is that it accommodates 6 players. On top of this, unlike your usual game of poker, this variant includes a few features that make it more exciting.

Before a round starts, every participant has to choose their position and seat at the table. However, not every box has to be filled since the mechanics can be changed based on player preference.

After choosing the positions, it is now time to begin the game. The gameplay of Russian poker can be divided into three categories: Placing an ante bet, dealing and taking action.

Placing an ante bet

Before the dealer reveals the cards, each player must place an ante or initial bet on the pot. There should never be a wager that exceeds either the minimum or maximum that has been pre-determined by the casino.

Dealing

The dealer shuffles the 52-card deck and distributes five cards to each player. Afterwards, the cards should always be dealt face-up and only the last card with the dealer is facedown.

Taking action

The player examines the five-card combination that was dealt with them and has the option to choose one of the following actions to take:

  • Fold - You give up your hand and ante
  • Bet - If you’re satisfied with your hand, you can place a bet that is twice the amount of ante and wait for the showdown.
  • Buy a card - Before being handed the sixth card from the deck, you must first make payment to the house in an amount equal to the ante for your box. Doubling the ante for that particular slot may be placed if you’re satisfied with their six-card hand. Otherwise, you have the option to fold, which forfeits the initial bet and the payout for the sixth card.
  • Exchange cards - After paying the house a sum equal to your ante and discarding up to four cards, you’ll be given an exact number of new cards from a deck of 52.

One by one, the cards in the dealer's hand are revealed after all of the players who are still in the game have finished their turns. Afterwards, the ante will be collected along with any payments made for swapping or purchasing the cards from all of the folded boxes.

There are two possible outcomes for the boxes where the players have put bets: either the dealer qualifies, in which case the player's hand will be better or worse than the dealer's.

Russian poker rules

The rules of Russian poker can be a little difficult to remember, but once you've participated in a few rounds of the game, you'll eventually get the hang of it. The list below indicates some of the things you should keep in mind when playing this poker variant:

  • Only when the preceding player has exchanged hands, bet or folded can the next player have their turn.

  • It is possible to guarantee half of a player's potential claim if they have a strong hand, such as a 3-of-a-kind or better. To be safe, this is done in case the dealer doesn’t qualify.

  • In a blind position, the player is unable to trade cards, purchase more slots, or purchase insurance once the first two boxes have been checked.

  • An increased payout is available to players who have several qualifying combinations.

Payouts

Players that bet on their hands are paid out following the payout table as well as their stake size. Here are a few of the hand combinations, descriptions and their payouts:

Russian poker strategies

It’s always good to have a few Russian poker tips and tricks for beginners and high rollers to ace the game. Check out some of the strategies to know how to win Russian poker:

Learn the gameplay and payouts

Just like with any other casino game, it’s always best to know the gameplay and payouts since it will help get acquainted with how the game works. Believe it or not, whether you are a novice player or a high roller, Russian poker can be confusing. It’s best to exercise your brain by reading articles that explain how the game works so that you can avoid confusion when you play.

Know when to fold

A common mistake a lot of players make, including high rollers, is not knowing when to fold. Usually, the idea of losing makes players more reckless with their wagers. Keep in mind that the game of poker is reliant on both skills and luck, this is why the chances of losing are still high. However, knowing when to fold allows you to prepare your mind and emotions for the outcome of the game.

It’s recommended to fold when you don’t have an Ace, King or Queen on your hands because this just means that other players have those card suits and have a higher chance of beating the dealer and winning the game.

Think twice before buying the 6th card

One feature that makes Russian poker unique from other variants is that it allows its players to buy cards. However, doing so has its pros and cons. If you happen to have a strong hand, like a three-of-a-kind and higher, it’s best to buy a sixth card to try and improve your chances. But if you have a weak hand, like not having any pair, folding is the best course of action for you.

Try not to go over your bankroll

There’s no shame in splurging, however, overspending often happens to casino players due to the drive of wanting to win the pot. It’s best to know when to stop to avoid going above your bankroll.

Doing this helps you avoid any type of gambling addiction and not spend all your money on one game. A tip you can do is to take a break from playing whenever you feel the need to, this works not only in poker but also in various casino games.

Know when to exchange cards

Exchanging cards is a great way to increase your chances of getting a better hand in Russian poker. One way you can create a good hand combination is by exchanging two cards if the three remaining cards can give you higher odds of winning.

Always remember to be wary when exchanging cards since they can make or break your hand combinations. Therefore, only exchange cards when you are confident that they would complete a hand, otherwise, it’s best to fold, bet or buy a card.

Get rid of favoured cards

It’s fine to have a goal in mind about what type of card you wish to be dealt, but you also have to remember that the cards are given in random order, so the chances of getting a great hand combination are slim. This is why there are four actions you can take, such as folding, betting, buying a new card or exchanging cards.
